Adrenalectomy is the surgical removal of the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland in many cases can develop tumors. This may require the removal of the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland is a small triangular shaped organ located above each kidney and is part of the endocrine system. Its function is to produce hormones (substances that circulate throughout the bloodstream and help regulate blood pressure, sugar level, salt production and other metabolic functions). These hormones include cortisol, aldesterone, epinephrine (adrenaline), and norepinephrine.
Removal of the adrenal gland can be performed using robotic, laparoscopic, or open surgery.
